Torchwood: Transcript: Children of Earth trailer from BBC website

Spoilers for the Torchwood Trailer
also a list of character names in the comments that were not in the trailer.

I couldn't find a subtitled version of this (is there one? did I not press the right buttons?) so I typed it up by ear. My laptop speakers weren't entirely helpful. I have no names for anyone except Jack and Ianto. I've given everyone descriptions instead. I do *not* want spoilers, even if you think they would improve the transcript.

I have only typed what people said. The images went past right quick, changed in the middle of sentences, and would take an age to type up anyway. Anyone as wants to contribute, try putting time stamps next to each description and we can paste it together with the words in two columns. Er, or logically we could if I'd put time stamps as well as descriptions. ANYway...

Right, the words were:

arrgh! My early transcripts are inaccurate! They're just slightly tidied up subtitle files with names on. There's differences when I actually listen to it.

Including in the line I need to quote for this fic.

arrgh, arrgh, arrgh.

Transcript: Torchwood: 2-11 Adrift

Disclaimer time again: We all know this belongs to the BBC, the very nice people who make pretty guys kiss for us. I pay my licence fee but that don't mean I own any of it. So clearly I'm pretty much hoping they don't mind. I make no money, I mean no harm. And it's not like anyone will be reading these things and not watching, right? Everyone could go watch on the website. But we'll be buying the DVDs and everything. Yes? Yes.

SPOILER WARNING: Well, it has every single word from the episode, plus description and editorial comment. That's pretty thoroughly spoiled. But only for this one episode.

where Transcripts come from

The Transcript UK site makes a file with all the words in, which I find very useful.

http://wikisubtitles.net/show/63
http://www.opensubtitles.com/en/search/sublanguageid-eng/idmovie-21052
http://www.tvsubtitles.net/tvshow-135-2.html

all have srt files, which have the times on and you can run them alongside downloaded episodes, if you can figure out how to tell the right program the right subtitle. VLC media player will do it, but I'm a bit clumsy with it. Also if the subtitles start out of sync I don't know how to budge them over a bit. I know there's software can do it though.

All of these files will have the same typos. I suspect they've all been OCRed by the same software. Which is... usually acceptable but often a bit off. It descends into leet speak with the numbers and all. Plus it can't tell j from J so I have to find/replace all the Jacks or it drives me nuts.

I suspect that all the other subtitle sites depend on Transcript UK. I think this because if that site doesn't have a file up, none of the others do either. That site gave me instructions for ripping subtitles off my own recordings; alas, before I could get close to getting the hang of it (it's 'easy' for that value of easy that thinks finding, installing and using three different programs is easy), my recorder got buggered up. So I don't got it. Or a recording of Fragments.

And that ep isn't up yet. Anywhere. Which is frustrating when it's the one I really want to work on.

Mostly I write this to get all my links in one place, cause I lost them when a window closed and it's just annoying having to google them up again.

Okay, so, that’s done. As usual, reply to my comment to tell me if anything is wrong with this. Formatting, disagree with the words, any of that. Also thanks are nice. And answer the poll so I can get a count of how many people use these.

Anyone putting any spoilers in here – even from the Next Week section – will be glared at like you’ve never been glared at before. Yes, even via computer screens. I’m serious. Do not spoiler.
… even if I do want to see the next episode very much indeed. I’m waiting until Wednesday.

Transcript done in one day and up to 0122 in the morning. Just a teensy tiny bit of commentary mixed in there. Remember anything in (these) is your friendly neighbourhood transcriber making snarky remarks. Oh, and describing the action. But all the stuff they actually say is there too. Probably. Slightly shonky subtitles + tired transcriber = correct me if I’m wrong. Reply to the comment below.

Transcripts

Been looking for transcripts some more.

I can find Torchwood transcripts, apparently complete. I only did a couple so finding the rest is yaay. Haven't read them yet.

I can find Doctor Who on that same site but they're only up to 1-06.

http://who-transcripts.atspace.com/ has new series episodes but is only up to Gridlock.

Are there any other places doing transcripts?

Does anyone know how to get the subtitles files? I only downloaded them for Torchwood. And I can't even remember where from.

Torchwood Transcripts - requests?

Right - I've done Torchwood episodes 1-01, 1-04, 1-07 & 1-08 as transcripts from downloaded TV subtitles. I own the first DVD so I have the DVD versions of subtitles on episodes 1-01 through 1-05. And if anyone else is doing transcripts I can't find them.

aha - found http://www.kilohoku.com/tw.html
haven't checked them yet, but they've got 1-01 thru 1-04 and still seem to be working on them.

http://community.livejournal.com/torch_wood/600943.html has 1-13, missing the first scene.

I woke up in a transcript kind of mood. Fiddly, unoriginal and repetitive is just about my speed today. This might wear off. I may well go back to bed. Or start in on the DVD pile of things I haven't watched at all yet. But if I do start with transcripts, what do y'all want next?

Torchwood 1-13 ending

I've been poking at the end of the episode.
And unfortunately I seem to be finding a few holes.
Or, for fic purposes, fortunately, since anything hole like obviously needs filling.

I did a bit of a transcript, not the whole thing by any means, just some comments I'll find useful later:

website

note: from comments on torchwood community, have found out the torchwood.org.uk site actually has more data in the floaty yet completely useless site than it does in the atually accessible version.

grr. arrgh.

guess I'll have to set aside some time to poke around in it then.

*headdesk*

It remains the *most annoying interface ever* and I can't make it reliable or predictable or anything useful like that.

I did find End of Days / Emergency protocol one / match the eye images game
results are kind of fun :-)

Have also found an IM conversation between Toshiko and Ianto from probably right after 1-12. (therefore spoilers abound)
I'm going to type it up here because it is an absolute pigging pain to find anything on the damn thing.

I read that and figure there's either continuity problems or some missing scenes.
It doesn't seem to fit. Not properly.

Also, I thought I was in the file area for 1-13, so why am I getting that???

okay, I'm about thirty seconds in to the first episode, and you know what I've noticed?

Compare contrast:

It's different. It's sodding different. I did the other one from the subtitles file, so how can it be different? Different subtitles on TV?

... I think I like the TV version better.

of course I DLed the subtitles and no longer recall if they were precisely as I read them at the time.

But the fact remains, that's two official sources contradicting each other.

I am headdesk here, I really am.

comment: There was some lovely camera work I was tempted to write about. Zooming in closer and closer for more tension / confrontation, backing off when someone backs down, and the general shakiness of Ianto. But then it would be all full of camera angles and probably less useful.

Transcript formatting

I used the subtitle files someone pointed me at to make two full and one partial Torchwood transcript so far. The partial has all the words but not all the who said it or location stuff.

I'm still playing with format a bit. In the play books we've got for class the NAME hangs off the left and the talking is all indented, which is handy and readable. (stage directions) are in italics in brackets. All black and white on paper.

On LJ I can use colors. So I put bits that were in subtitles but I didn't hear in red, and bits that weren't in subtitles but I did hear in blue.
Used bold for emphasis. Because CAPS is what the subtitles use, but CAPS means CHARACTER and not a word that is said.

I'm wondering if that's the best way around.
Would Character EMPHASIS work better on screen?

I've seen transcripts that put
Character
on a different line than what they say

but that doubles the length of the transcript, much more scrolling, and I didn't find it hugely easier to read.

Subtitles on my actual TV are lovely and have color coded characters. Easy to figure who says what. But if I do that I have to think of a new way of distinguishing my bits from the subtitle bits. And with NAME at the start of the line I don't think it is very necessary anyways.

... I'm fussing about tiny details here. Not terribly relevant.

I have college related stuff to do. Just not much of it. I need to pull together 4 different versions of the script we'll be using on Tuesday. Should take me about 5 minutes, so obviously I'll leave it until just before class :eyeroll:

Also need to write down the descriptions of clothes I thought up
and maybe actually acquire the photos for the backdrop
... only I can only think of the one. I mean, I'm sure there's a lot more images could be used, I just don't see how they'd add anything. Just the den made of shopping trolley bars and the gate at the end.

... it could even be an animated gate, if I use the computer instead of the ELMO.

ELMO is a very funny word for a projector. It amuses.

anyways, /ramble
